Games as sources of material culture

History, culture, and of course cultural history have a very strong material dimension. Material culture is expressed, among other things, in objects and historical information related to them. But how could the study of objects be of importance for the historian? Please remember that because they are made or modified by humans, objects reflect the cultural background of the people who made, commissioned, purchased, or used them. By extension, they also reflect some of the cultural values of the collective entity they belonged to.

Games have a strong material dimension. Thus, they are valuable sources for the study of material culture. The material dimension of games is related to a number of areas and the relevant disciplines, from architecture to the design, production and circulation of boards, cards, dices and everything else that has been used to play games. The most important task of the historian is to place all these manifestations of material culture into a historical narrative on the cultural entities which have produced or used them.
