The Royal Pastime of Cupid is at least four hundred years old. It is a board race-game dedicated to erotic love and Cupid plays a leading role on the board and the rules of the game.
The board has the form of a snake. And this is not by chance. In a text printed on a board produced in Paris in 1640, including mainly the rules of the game, the producers explain that the track has the for of a snake “because love in the guise of a Serpent slides into the hearts of those whom he possesses and poisons them with venom”. So, if you are thinking of playing the game, beware!
