Roll the chess dice …

My dear history player,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to “Games of History”!

My name is Apostolos Spanos and I am a professor of History at the University of Agder, located in Kristiansand, Norway. “Games of History” is one of my academic projects and I am happy to share with you some of its results.

Board and card games, parlour and role playing games, sports and other types of games are excellent, and extremely attractive, historical sources. This is the main idea behind the project “Games of History”, realised so far in a university course (BA-level) and a monograph.

Please notice that this is not a project on the history of games. It is a project on games and gaming as historical sources. The real study object is not the games themselves but the societies who produced and played them.

The Bachelor-course “Games of History” has been given the last years to the students of history at the University of Agder, located in Kristiansand, Norway. From January 2021 onwards the digitized part of the course is offered here free for anyone who is interested in games and history. If you are an educator, feel free to use the videos in your teaching.

I am very happy and thankful you are willing to play this game of historical knowledge and historical consciousness. To get a first picture on what the project is about (and what it is not) you might watch a short audiovisual invitation and have a look at the Quick Start Guide of the website.

If you are an educator, you are welcome to use the videos in your teaching.

So, roll the dice and enjoy the fascinating game we call history!
